Before I share the details of this fantastic alternative, I’d like to share my personal journey with you that began when I was in third grade.
I had struggled since kindergarten with ADD and learning disabilities but in third grade it got worse. My Dad stepped in every night to help. These nightly sessions turned out to be more of a “research experiment” to figure out exactly how I could learn. While I was obviously bright, the traditional classroom wasn’t working for me. And, over the years, we discovered the missing piece - Intense, Coordinated Movement. We invented activities that used movement to help me process the nightly homework and unfinished schoolwork. By the time I graduated from college with honors, I was passionate about helping struggling students.
In 1975, I started teaching at a school where most of the children had severe learning, attention and behavior struggles and I began the difficult task of helping these students pay attention, learn and behave.
My first thought was, “How will I ever do this?”
Our school began a “motor-skills” program that used movement activities daily with the students. I added lots of the techniques my Dad and I had discovered that had helped me. And, I began to see the students learn faster, pay attention better and get their behavior under control more easily.
The realization that movement could help all students learn more easily gave me confidence that I could offer hope to these students.
Still, I wondered how many different kinds of learning, attention and behavior problems there were. Some kids with one kind of problem responded to certain kinds of movement and other kids with different problems responded differently. I was puzzled by the large number of symptoms I observed and how to decide what they meant.
When my own kids got to school, they started to struggle like I had struggled. My heart sank. I couldn’t imagine letting them go through school with the same learning and attention problems I had growing up.
I wanted them to be happy and successful at school.
So, I began to use the movement activities I had perfected over the years in the classroom and at home with my Dad.
But I thought, “There must be an easier solution I can use to help them more quickly.” I didn’t want to see them struggle for even one more day!
And, I was a single parent, teaching movement programs in my local school district and getting my masters degree, so every minute counted.
I began to research new techniques and to try out dozens of programs that sounded like they might help. I was willing to try everything that looked the least bit promising. I discovered what helped one of my kids might not help the other one. And, I discovered some amazing techniques that helped both of them.
One day, I was thinking about the way a building is constructed with a foundation, walls and a roof. As I was thinking how some kids had more severe problems and some had different ways of learning, I started putting the different symptoms of the kids I had taught into different places in the building and rearranging them until I had each of the most important skills written in the foundation.
I listed all of the “symptoms” I had observed in my students in the walls of my building, and I put the academic skills in the roof. Then I put a bell on top of the building for self-esteem (the most important part of the whole building!). I kept playing with this idea until I had placed all of the different symptoms and each of their causes into different places in my building.
Suddenly it dawned on me: The pieces I had put in the foundation were all “brain processing skills”. “If I just improve the brain processing skills first, the skills in the walls would get strong enough to hold up the academic work (in the roof of the building). The self-esteem (at the level of the bell) would naturally develop when the foundation, walls and roof were strong.
And in this one “ah ha” moment, I had the answer to the whole problem for both of my children. And the solution was quick and easy.
Both of them are now avid, happy learners with successful careers they love.
After completing 4,000 “hours” to become a children’s therapist, in 2003 I decided it was the right time to start my own learning center instead. I wanted to focus on getting the brain ready and able to learn by helping kids develop the important skills in the learning foundation first.
